Ukraine
Armenians settled in Ukraine during the early Middle Ages. There was a large Armenian community in Kiev, the capital of ancient Russia. The flow of Armenians to Kiev Russia grew in the 11th century, especially due to tension stemming from the dominance of the Turkish-Seljuks. The Armenian Diaspora community in Ukraine grew during the Soviet era. Since 1988 Armenian non-governmental, cultural, charitable, and youth organizations have been established in Armenian-populated cities and regions of the country. In 1989, the Armenian Union of Kiev was founded. Since the collapse of the USSR, the Armenian community in Ukraine has proliferated. The union of Ukrainian Armenians was established in 2001. This is a large community structure with regional branches throughout Ukraine, which unites the large Armenian community of Ukraine.
Areas with large Armenian communities include Kiev, Odessa, Lvov, Kharkov, Dnepropetrovsk and Donetsk. There are 33 Armenian churches and historical-cultural monuments in Ukraine: Lvov, Kiev, Kharkov, Odessa, Belgorod-Dniestrovsk, Makeyevka, Dnepropetrovsk, Nikolaev, and Izmail. The Union of Armenians of Ukraine is a large Ukrainian-based community organization with regional offices throughout Ukraine.
There are:
- more than 50 Armenian community organizations and unions
- 20 youth organizations
- About 45 Armenian Sunday schools, colleges, and kindergartens.
Publications include the Armenian Newspaper, Nreni Magazine and Aragats Magazines. Communities well-known website “Analitika” (http://analitikaua.net/) provides daily information and analysis about events in Armenia, in the Diaspora and the Armenian community in Ukraine.
