High Commissioner Zareh Sinanyan in Conversation with "CivilNet"

29 July 2020

In his statement to "CivilNet", the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Zareh Sinanyan, voiced concern over the recent Azerbaijani aggression on the Armenian border, highlighting several important issues:

  • Today, Azeris and Turks are reminding the Diaspora that Armenia and the Diaspora constitute one entity. Azerbaijan, having no other alternatives, resorted to such violent actions on third-party territories. This shows Azerbaijan’s deeply rooted lack of confidence, frustration, and weakness.
  • During the first hour of Azerbaijan’s aggression on the Armenian border, I immediately contacted local community organizations and individuals in Russia. Throughout this period, I attentively followed and analyzed how to avoid and prevent further escalation of violence. Indeed, everyone is entitled to self-defense, however, we cannot be the initial aggressors and stoop to their level. I also worked with the Armenian Ambassador to Russia, HE Vardan Toghanyan, with whom I was in constant communication, same as with our counterparts in Ukraine and in European states. Currently, I am also in touch with our compatriots in Georgia and Turkey.
  • The situation is now relatively calm. We must continue to call for restraint while cooperating with local authorities to prevent further aggravation of the situation.
  •  As long as we remain strong on the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, which is inclusive of the border of Nagorno-Karabagh, and are still able to restrain and contain the Azerbaijanis, it is only natural that we should be ready for the consequences of Azerbaijan’s violent aggression everywhere, including in the Diaspora.
