Malta
Armenians settled in Malta after the fall of the Kingdom of Cilicia in 1375 when many Armenian knights, nobles, and warriors moved to the island of Malta. Some family graves have been preserved to this day. The Church of the Madonna of Liesse was built in 1620 by Fra Giacomo De Chess du Bellay, Bailiff of Armenia.
The second influx of Armenians to Malta took place during the Armenian Genocide and most recently after the collapse of the Soviet Union. At present, there is no accurate data on how many Armenians live here, as many with Armenian roots have assimilated over the years. The number of Armenians who have settled in Malta in the last two decades is around 500.
On July 31, 2009, the first conference of Armenians in Malta took place, during which the Malta Armenian Community International NGO was established.
There are no Armenian religious institutions, schools, or media outlets in Malta. Armenians are mainly engaged in business, with numerous doctors and IT specialists.
In a collaborative initiative with the head of the "Armenian Community of Malta", an Armenian khachkar was erected in 2009. It is located in one of the most beautiful areas in Valletta, Hastings Gardens, as a sign of friendship and gratitude with Malta.
